Legal Compliance

The Health and Safety (First Aid) regulations 1981 states:

An employer shall provide, or ensure that there are provided, such equipment and facilities as are adequate and appropriate in the circumstances for enabling first aid to be rendered to his employees if they are injured or become ill at work.”

These Regulations apply to all workplaces including those with less than five employees and also to the self-employed.

Extra Information

Workplace First Aid

Recommendations and guideline standards for workplace first aid provision in the UK are provided by the two main official bodies of The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and The British Standards Institute (BSI).

Whilst these recommendations may set out the minimum guidelines, all workplaces must undertake a First Aid Risk Assessment to ensure that their individual first aid provision meets the needs and risks associated with the actual working activities undertaken at any given site.

The Health & Safety Executive (HSE)

Under The Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981, the HSE have issued official guidance for employers on managing the provision of first aid in the workplace. The HSE Guidance on Regulations (publication L74) applies to all employers and provides guidance on managing first aid (kit types, equipment and facilities), first aid personnel (cover levels, training and appointed persons) and first aid awareness across the workplace.

The British standards institute (bsi)

As a world renown standards authority the BSI have developed a full set of first aid kit recommendations that build upon the requirements of The Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981. The British Standard BS 8599-1 specification for the contents of workplace first aid kits recommends appropriate equipment and consumables for addressing injury risks across a range of environments.
